After years of development and moderate successes, the electric vehicle industry is poised to replace internal combustion engine technology with a green alternative. In 2012, UK sales of electric cars were just over 1200. Sales of electric vehicles all over the world have been increasing since then with 2.2 million sold in 2019, rising to 6.6 million in 2021. This represents almost 9% of the global car market and the rate of growth is expected to increase as governments set ambitious targets to end the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.
