Manually operated emergency stop switches are provided so that machinery can be brought to the swiftest possible halt in a potential emergency. That emergency might be an imminent threat to people or simply to the machinery itself. Most industrial machinery is required by statute (EN-60947-5-5 and EN 13850) to provide emergency stop switches but there are many additional circumstances when they are useful to operators and service engineers.
