Based in Munich, Germany, Gigaset is a multinational corporation with more than 1,250 employees. Formed in 2008, the company focuses on communications technology and manufactures a comprehensive range of DECT telephones. Gigaset was formerly associated with Siemens and contributed to advances in telephony such as the DECT protocol and the use of SMS messaging across wired networks. Two types of Gigaset products can be supplied from stock – desktop phones for office use and DECT cordless phones suitable for residential locations. Desktop phones include wall or desk-mounting options, some with a DECT base station and/or an integrated answer machine. Onboard features on some models include CLIP caller ID, call lists of 30 – 60 numbers, and storage of 6 – 1,000 contact numbers. Desktop systems can be analogue only or combined with ISDN and Ethernet connectivity. DECT cordless phones share those connection options but can accommodate 4 – 6 mobile units with each base station, and are powered either by cell or lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Other cordless-phone features include backlit, touchscreen colour displays on 1.8, 2.4 or 3.2-inch screens, and storage space for up to 2,000 numbers.
